Get Started

You need to start with an idea. Your idea can be about anything.

If you do not have an idea, just start writing and do not stop writing. Keep going for as long as you can. When you are done, go do something else; listen to some music, or have a snack. Then go back to what you wrote and you should find an idea there somewhere. This exercise is called free writing and is practiced by many professional writers.

Once you know what you want to write about you need to organize it into a story. Unlike an essay, story writing is not as formal and there is a lot more you can do with it. Be creative.

Your story should have the following ingredients:

A character or characters. Describe your character. What is his or her name? What does he or she look like? What is his or her personality like? What is his or her relationship with other characters?

A setting. Describe where your story takes place. What city or country? What does the place look like? What is the weather like? What are the people like who live there?

A situation. Something must happen in the story that interests the reader. Describe the situation clearly. What  happened before the situation? What is gong to happen after? What affect does the situation have on your character or characters.

A plot. Your story should have a beginning a middle and an end. Your story should leave the reader satisfied.

Extra advice:

  • Your story becomes more colourful and imaginative with the more adjectives and adverbs you use.
  • Make sure all the details you put in the story are relevant.
  • Get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere.
  • Your story is your story and you can do what you want with it.
  • Guidelines are supposed to be crossed and rules are meant to be broken.
